Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. As the nation’s premier plutonium center of excellence, LANL ensures the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile while advancing research in areas such as space exploration, renewable energy, supercomputing, and medicine. The Pit Technologies (PT) Division plays a critical role in delivering high-quality plutonium-related products and services in a highly regulated, precision manufacturing environment. We are seeking an Engineering Technologist to join the PT-8 Machining Group, supporting technical and manufacturing operations within a Category 2 Nuclear Facility. This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 1 or Engineering Technologist 2 level, depending on the skills and experience of the selected candidate. This is a regular, onsite position in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
- Engineering Technologist 1: $87,800 – $143,000
- Engineering Technologist 2: $96,600 – $158,000
Responsibilities for Engineering Technologist 1:
- Extract technical data from engineering drawings and specifications to ensure procured materials meet design requirements, national codes, and LANL quality standards
- Manage consolidated bills of materials (CBOM) and coordinate with procurement and warehousing teams to support project objectives
- Serve as a primary point of contact for PT-8 in Integrated Project Team (IPT) meetings, interfacing with project personnel
- Apply engineering, mathematics, and scientific principles to solve routine technical problems and support manufacturing processes
- Collaborate with engineering staff to implement design changes, manufacturing methods, and corrective actions
- Evaluate post-inspection issues, including tooling, fixturing, and material performance
- Support CNC machining operations by understanding machine capabilities (e.g., Haas, Mazak, Moore, Precitech, DMU)
- Assist in training and mentoring early-career engineers and machinists in design, manufacturability, and machine tool operations
- Support safe and compliant operations within a high-tech nuclear manufacturing environment
Additional Responsibilities for Engineering Technologist 2:
- Work independently to represent the PT-8 Group in IPT and other technical meetings while providing guidance to customers and junior personnel
- Prepare, review, and document technical information in accordance with engineering policies, procedures, and standards
- Provide project support, including reviewing bid analyses and making recommendations
- Ensure adherence to engineering programs, practices, and compliance requirements across projects
Qualifications for Engineering Technologist 1:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field and 2+ years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Familiarity with reviewing engineering drawings and technical specifications to extract relevant data
- Basic knowledge of national codes and standards and quality assurance (QA) requirements
- Understanding of supply chain processes and materials management principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Word) and other relevant software tools
Additional Qualifications for Engineering Technologist 2:
- Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Experience applying engineering principles, systems technology, and technical design concepts
- Working knowledge of QA standards and LANL management systems and experience working in fast-paced environments requiring high accuracy and attention to detail
- Familiarity with pre-procurement documentation, submittal packages, materials management and construction disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, and fire protection
- Understanding of industry and regulatory codes and standards, including DOE/NNSA requirements, ASTM, and ASME
