Position Overview

The Hattie Chung Lab in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Associate Research Scientist. The ideal candidate will be a highly organized and reliable scientist with deep technical expertise in molecular biology, developing platforms for high-content imaging and next-gen sequencing technologies in tissue biology to serve as a collaborative foundation for postdoctoral fellows and PhD students. The ideal applicant will help shape the scientific direction of the lab in alignment with the PI, and will also ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

This position will require ~25% of effort on managing laboratory logistics, including tracking and ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and ensuring compliance with institutional safety regulations. They will oversee animal protocols and regulatory documentation, and onboard and train new lab members in molecular, cellular, and tissue biology techniques. In this part of the role, the ideal candidate will consistently execute delegated tasks from the PI to ensure alignment with lab priorities and operational continuity.

Ideal prior technical experiences include standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR), immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture, animal experiments, confocal microscopy, and tissue biology techniques.

This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset. The ideal candidate will be committed to maintaining a professional, respectful, and collaborative laboratory environment and will take ownership of operational excellence.

Primary Responsibilities

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, professional judgment, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment (including outside of standard working hours).
• Experience with two or more of the following molecular biology techniques: molecular biology techniques (PCR and cloning), tissue culture, flow cytometry, western blotting, next-generation sequencing, single-cell sequencing, immunohistochemistry.
• Experience handling mice. Familiarity with injections and tissue harvest is preferred.
• Ability to effectively teach and mentor trainees, including PhD students and undergraduate students.
• Familiarity with microscopy techniques.
• Participate in institutional and departmental career development opportunities.

Requirements

Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. in the basic sciences, in biology or engineering, or a related discipline, and must have at least 2 years of post-PhD experience.
