The Job
We are searching for an IT Infrastructure Specialist (Volunteer) who will handle key responsibilities by dedicating 5 - 7 hours weekly of volunteer time.
The IT Infrastructure Specialist (Volunteer) supports the design, implementation, and maintenance of Black Engineers of Canada's cloud infrastructure, networks, security protocols, and hosting environments. This role helps ensure the organization's digital platforms remain reliable, secure, and scalable to support growing membership, virtual events, volunteer operations, and national programs. The successful candidate will contribute their technical expertise to strengthen the technology foundation that supports BEC's mission and impact across Canada.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Infrastructure Management
- Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure and hosting environments.
- Support the administration and optimization of servers, networks, and digital platforms.
- Monitor infrastructure performance and recommend improvements to enhance reliability and scalability.
- Help ensure systems remain operational and available to support organizational activities.
Cloud & Systems Administration
- Support cloud services and platforms, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, or similar environments.
- Assist with user account management, access controls, and system permissions.
- Help maintain backups, disaster recovery processes, and business continuity measures.
- Support software updates, patches, and infrastructure maintenance activities.
Cybersecurity & Risk Management
- Assist in implementing and maintaining cybersecurity best practices.
- Monitor and address potential security vulnerabilities and risks.
- Support identity and access management initiatives, including authentication and permission controls.
- Help ensure compliance with data privacy and security requirements.
Network & Platform Support
- Assist with troubleshooting infrastructure, networking, and connectivity issues.
- Support website hosting environments, cloud applications, and virtual collaboration platforms.
- Help optimize network performance and system reliability.
- Collaborate with developers and technical teams to ensure infrastructure supports application requirements.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Create and maintain infrastructure documentation, diagrams, and technical procedures.
- Recommend improvements to infrastructure, security, and operational processes.
- Support the development of IT policies, standards, and best practices.
- Share technical knowledge and assist in building organizational IT capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Interest in supporting community, social, or charitable initiatives.
- Degree, diploma, certification, or equivalent experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, Systems Administration, or a related field.
- Experience supporting cloud infrastructure, networks, servers, or enterprise IT environments.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or similar technologies.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals, cybersecurity principles, and systems administration.
- Experience with identity and access management, backups, monitoring tools, or infrastructure automation is considered an asset.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, service-oriented mindset.
