- Mechanical Inspector (Code Enforcement)
Description
Works under general supervision of the Senior Inspector to make inspections to enforce and/or insure conformance to Codes of Memphis and Shelby County Code Enforcement.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience in the mechanical HVAC and/or Gas trade industry; OR Five (5) years of experience in the building construction industry; AND
- High school diploma or GED
- Must obtain ICC Certified Mechanical Inspector credentials in Residential and Commercial within one year of hire date with one of the two within six months of hire date.
- PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs field inspections according to inspection procedures and the Mechanical HVAC & Gas codes.
Investigates and answer complaints. - Recommends corrective actions regarding Code Violations.
- Documents inspections approval or denial utilizing assigned technical equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed
KSA’s
- Thorough understanding and knowledge of applicable Mechanical HVAC and/or Gas codes and ordinances.
Ability to make decisions and tactfully interact with disgruntled customers. - Ability to perform field inspections and investigations using Mechanical HVAC and/or Gas Codes.
- General computer usage experience and skills.
Special Requirements
- Must have a valid Tennessee "Class D" Driver's License or secure on upon date of employment
- Must possess State Fire Marshal Mechanical Inspector Certification or obtain same within one (1) year of hire date.
Physical Requirements
- Must pass a physical examination
- Work involves exposure to areas under construction
- Must possess the physical dexterity to access all areas during construction including, but not limited to bending, stooping, climbing ladders, accessing attics and walking on uneven terrain.

The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees.
